July's Monthly Resource Guide
Questions to ask, books to read, games to play and resources you need!
I finally buckled down and decided to finish the ADHD assessment I began in November…of 2023.
I had started it after my son was diagnosed because it opened up my eyes to all of the facets of ADHD that go beyond grades and academics. Emotional regulation, anxiety, my obsessive planning to avoid feeling out of control - there was so much that started to make sense as I dove deeper into this world.
And after I got confirmation (without the official diagnosis that would allow for a prescription for medication), I stopped going to appointments. I didn’t need meds, I thought. I had been handling everything for this long.
And that’s true - but I was handling it all with an undercurrent of anxiety, always waiting for the one thing I would miss, the one ball I would drop.
It was when I turned 40 last month that I realized, why am I choosing to live this way? Who am I trying to prove things to? If there is a way to live life without always having my stomach in a knot, without actively coaching myself to “focus, don’t interrupt, focus, don’t interrupt” during every conversation, why would I deny myself that opportunity?
But as I’ve gone through the process it’s opened my eyes to the true 2E experience. The amount of times when I’ve said things like “Yes! Daydreaming! I do that all the time” only to be followed up by “Nope, it never impacted me during school” is wild.
Being twice-exceptional is such a unique thing because while you have the struggles of ADHD, you also have the quick cognition and pattern recognition to quickly put band-aids over everything, resulting in a patchworked version of yourself.
I plan on exploring this more in a future post, but for now let’s dive into July’s Monthly Resource Guide.
